here, translucently

"J.K. Rowling is dead. She has been dead since 26th June 1997, and has died countless times since. Her deaths are public, popular and highly profitable. I’ve come to her palace to claim my inheritance."

In 2020, J.K. Rowling speaks out publicly against trans people. In 1967, Roland Barthes resurrects a ghost, changing literary theory forever. In 1830, Honoré de Balzac describes a gender bending singer.

"here, translucently" threads these people and events together to see what trans/non-binary people can do in the face of our persistent erasure. Its poaches in forbidden archives and explores new literary realms to find trans history, creativity, and resistance.

This book combines fiction, theory, and poetry to ask what it means for transness to write itself. When our voices are so readily collapsed, retold, erased, by authors other than ourselves. What shape should our writing take, to transcend the binaries that oppress us?

It's the story of someone's fantasy quest for their dignity.
It's an essay in search of (tr)ancestry.
It's a poem from the depths of a voice erased.
